Derek Philip Hough

Derek Hough writes on various subjects and his latest work is a small book detailing the rules needed to reduce or eliminate warfare. His booklet, Global Leviathan, sketches out a utopian vision of the future in which a world leader or world authority with a monopoly over large-scale weaponry and also armed with a new definition of democracy will bring peace to the world.

Derek Hough’s only novel, A Business Affair, is set in the aftermath of The Great War, where the protagonists Richard and Christine dedicate so much time and effort to building a world-class business that they overlook the fact that they may actually be in love with each other.

Writing under the pen name of Jeffrey Chaucer, Derek Hough reminisces about his thirteen years as a hotelier in his short book The Hotelier’s Tale. The names of people and places have been disguised, but otherwise the almost unbelievable stories are 100% true.

Derek Hough’s earlier book is on the very different subject of Evolutionary Theory and is entitled Evolution: from copying errors to evolvability. He logically spells out the current theory, explains why it is incorrect, and proceeds to propose a better theory, one that Darwin himself would have approved.

He has used genetic algorithms to study various aspects of evolution and makes comments on other scientific areas when he thinks he can make a useful contribution. The links to his papers and YouTube videos are listed below.

Evolutionary Theory in Seven Articles.

Neo-Darwinism is an outdated theory. It has never been updated for the computer age, despite the fact that the subject matter can only be investigated with the aid of computers. These articles, apart from explaining Hough’s new theory, discuss various aspects of the subject including Darwin’s view on a comprehensive theory of evolution, a critique of Douglas Futuyma’s classic textbook on the subject, two references to Richard Dawkins including a discussion on Altruism and Group Selection and finally a rebuttal of the claim that Kettlewell’s Moths were an example of ‘evolution in action’.

Sex and the elimination of copying errors.

This paper explores two separate elements of sex, namely sexual selection and crossover. A simple computerised genetic algorithm can confirm a possible connection between sexual selection and the elimination of copying errors.

Evolutionary Theory and Computerised Genetic Algorithms.

Neo-Darwinism can be usefully studied with the help of a Computerised Genetic Algorithm. Only a mathematical approach can reveal the shortcomings of the current dogma and point the way to a revised definition of the Theory of Evolution.

The origins of Darwin’s ‘unknown laws of variation’.

The goal of this project is to encourage biologists to exclude any mention of ‘copying errors’ from the latest definition of the theory of evolution. Instead, it should be accepted that evolutionary change is facilitated by an evolved system of variety-maintenance and variety-generation which in turn leads to novel structures and complexity.

Derek Hough has also tried his hand at satire, and he gives his views on the downside of humanity with a crude puppet show.
